TalkTalk launches another first, this time network-level blocking of nuisance calls. We also were the first provider to make all landline privacy calling features, such as anonymous caller reject, last caller barring and caller display, completely free. Within two years, we block over 20 million nuisance and scam calls a month.
TalkTalk TV arrives, with the launch of the YouView set top box. Our TV service proves as popular as our broadband and fixed line launches were, quickly becoming the UK’s fastest growing TV service. This is swiftly followed by the launch of TalkTalk Mobile, initially as a 3G MVNO on Vodafone’s network.
TalkTalk launches HomeSafe, becoming the UK’s first internet provider to introduce free, whole home parental filters. HomeSafe allows customers to set the boundaries that are most appropriate for them and their families, with over a third of our customers taking advantage of them. This year, Opal Telecom also rebrands as TalkTalk Business, offering cutting edge connectivity to tens of thousands of companies, ranging from start ups to major corporations, as well as offering wholesale network access to dozens of resellers.
TalkTalk demerges from Carphone Warehouse, becoming an independent company listed on the London Stock Exchange. We also become a founder member of Project Canvas, working with BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Arqiva and BT to develop a new TV platform merging terrestrial TV and online content.
TalkTalk sponsors the X Factor, a relationship that has gone from strength to strength over recent years. We continue to grow organically and through acquisitions, reaching a quarter of the UK’s residential broadband market after purchasing Tiscali UK and Pipex.
TalkTalk launches free broadband, completely transforming the UK’s residential market. Demand far outstrips supply, but our position as a challenger brand, determined to disrupt the established telecoms market, is established. We also buy AOL Broadband from Time Warner, keeping it as a separate brand until 2015; while Opal unveils its next generation network across the country.
Local loop unbundling allows alternative providers to place their own equipment in telephone exchanges, encouraging a new wave of competition and innovation. Opal acquires Vartec, Telequip and OneTel.
TalkTalk launches unlimited free calls between TalkTalk customers, our first truly disruptive offering. Opal wins the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and Innovation.
TalkTalk launches as a consumer brand, after the Government passes the 2003 Communications Act, aimed at encouraging challenger brands to disrupt the telecoms market.
